Art historical research on sculpture has predominantly focused on biographical, historical, and stylistic approaches, whereas the methodological foundations of its interpretation remain comparatively underexplored. This article examines these methodological challenges and proposes a conceptual framework that considers sculpture as a multilayered system of meaning emerging through the interaction of material, form, light, space, time, and the viewer. It also addresses the role of the art historian by asking whether interpretation merely reveals the meaning of a work of art or actively contributes to its construction.
