Abstract

The article presents the issues related to the status of settlements both abroad and in the Republic of Armenia. It was argued that the classification of settlements currently implemented in our country, limited only to the concepts of "city" and "village", does not correspond to the domestic historical experience, besides, the principles of granting the status of settlements have not yet been defined. On the basis of the experience implemented abroad, the key indicators characterizing the settlements were selected: the number of the population, the availability of infrastructures providing public services and the main employment of the population, analyzing and evaluating the general image of the RA settlements according to these indicators. As a result of the analysis, it was proposed to use not only "city" and "village", but also "vostan"(Big City), "urban-type settlement" and "township" to define settlements. A new settlement classification model was developed according to the mentioned concepts and selected criteria. The main changes and additions to the existing classification of settlements as a result of the implementation of the proposed model are presented. The proposals can be applied within the framework of amendments and additions to the legal acts that determine the legal status of the settlements of the republic.
